Objective
The Creature Mark project is about visually interpreting an assigned creature using basic elements of design. It focuses on showing the key physical, behavioral, and personality traits while translating the creature into a graphic style. The project also explores how far you can push abstraction while still keeping a connection to the original form.
Research
The creature mark project began with me doing a deep dive, further forming an understand of my animal. Learning more about prominent features, creature movements, and the creature's personality.
Sketches
After some research, I began to sketch out the silhouette and small details of how I wanted my shark to look. Starting with simple lines, then beginning to integrate elipse's and rounded geometric shapes to create a even creature mark.
Exploration
During the exploration process, I transferred my sketches into Illustrator beginning to create digital iterations of the shark. Designing different fins, teeth, eye shapes, and all other fine details til I was Impressed.
Final Mark
Creature mark + Graphic elements + Type
Part 2 of this project focuses on communicating the meaning of a given concept within specific constraints. It explores different visual and expressive approaches, with an emphasis on how composition and design choices work together to express meaning.
Application + Refinement
From the start of the application process, I wanted my creature mark to be expressed visually as if it was in water, involving the graphic elements and type. I explored several different compositions, then began using contrasting type, to appeal and visually fit my expectations the most.
Typography
I chose Open Sans for It's clean, modern readability, while Pulpo Rust adds a textured, water-like effect that reinforces the aquatic theme. These two seemed to pair well together for my final composition.
